I found this quote while looking through a book recently and thought about the profound message it had on me as an educator. My goal at the end of each school year is to have students who are independent, happy and feel comfortable taking a risk and a chance. This year I have seen such incredible growth in each of your children. This summer I encourage you to give them the opportunity to grow and explore and to play without stringent boundaries. Let them dig and get dirty. Let them climb. Let them go outside and create imaginary worlds. Encourage them to be brave and to try new things.

-4/17 - Grandparents Day - Noon Dismissal. If a grandparent is unable to attend we suggest asking a good friend, or someone who your child views as a special person in their life. If you prefer to keep your child at home that day because they do not have a Grandparent or special friend to attend please let me know in advance. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Content and Curriculum:
Next week we will celebrate our All About published books. We will be inviting adults from around the school to come and listen to us read these amazing books. The subjects that they chose to write all about were awesome - All About Soccer, All About Beaver Creek, All About Snowboarding, All About Art and many more! Our next writing unit will be poetry. Once we get going in this unit we will pick a date for our Poetry Cafe! This will be the culmination of our poetry unit and the timing will depend on how the unit goes. We will get a date to you as soon as we have one!
During Reading Workshop we will continue working on metacognition skills. Thus far we have covered visualizing, questioning, schema and making connections. Next week we will continue to work on questioning before, during and after reading. We will focus on deeper thinking questions. One way this was presented this week was showing water running down a piece of paper and then glue running down the same piece of paper. Students shared their thinking about why one was fast and the other slow. This led to thin questions (answers you can find easily in the book) and thick questions (ones that encourage you to infer and think deeper).
Our Math In Focus chapter will lead us to discussing Subtraction Stories. Story problems are a common context for applying subtraction ideas. As the story problems are presented, children use manipulatives and models to make sense of the situations. Students will also connect the stories to written numerals and number sentences using symbols.
This is how excited we are to be doing Writing Workshop again!
