February!

Looking Ahead To Next Week:
I apologize for the lack of pictures this week.  Due to being out with a stomach bug this week I didn't get many photos taken.  Next week is a very, very busy week!  We will celebrate the 100th day of school on Monday, a dress rehearsal and real Kindergarten Music Performance, have a Math In Focus coach on campus to do professional development, Valentine's Day and the Faculty/Staff vs. 8th Grade Basketball game.

In regards to Valentine's Day, in Kindergarten we really focus on the importance of friendship - what it means to look, sound and act like a good, kind friend.  We don't focus on love, boyfriends, kissing etc.  If your child brings this up at home just remind them that the holiday is a celebration of all those in our life that are special to us.

In Writing Workshop next week we will continue working on writing our How To Books.  Ask your children what their topics have been!  We will also be making Valentine's for our 4th Grade buddies.  We have already made Valentines for both Alums and Veterans so we are quite good at cutting out hearts and writing sweet messages.

During Reading Workshop we are going to keep focusing on the importance of Thinking About Your Thinking While Reading.  Big stuff for kindergartners.  We are emphasizing several metacognitive reading strategies like predicting, inferring, questioning and making connections. It's important that readers have busy brains and stop to think about what is going on in their head as they read.

During Math next week we will work on counting on and counting back.  You can encourage this at home by asking questions such as, "We have 3 forks but we're having a dinner party tonight and need to have a total of 12.  Count on and tell me how many forks we are missing."  Help your child say "3" in their mind and then "count on" raising a finger each time they say a new number until they reach 12.  We will continue to play counting on games - reaching each child where they are by differentiating the level of question we ask them, pairing them with like thinking children and by encouraging greater math talk.
