Choice

You may have heard about Choice Time.  It is a hit in West K.  On A and E days we have an additional Choice Time in the afternoons.  This is a wonderful time for children to collaborate, create, share, converse, play and explore.  This afternoon we extended our Choice Time because of all of the incredible things that were happening in our classroom.  Teachable moments kept popping up that Meaghan and I could address in the moment.  For example.....3 students finished a puzzle.  On the box they noticed it was 7ft long.  However, when they measured they were getting all different numbers with using their feet.  Lightbulb!  In came a ruler and we had a discussion about standard and non-standard measurement.  Off our 3 puzzlers and measurers went to find more things they could measure!  Take a look at some of the other great things that occurred during Choice Time today!

New puzzles to explore thanks to the Andersons for loaning them to West K!

Teamwork

Lola chose to write numbers and write numbers and write more numbers!

Anna created equations!

Logan wanted to survey his classmates to determine if they had pets.  We guided him to recording his answers.  Soon, many other friends wanted to create their own survey!

Friends were writing numbers and making tally marks - their choices - not the teachers!

Dylan measured the cash register and played shopkeeper and buyer with friends.

They used EVERY block for this creation together!

Ask Aluinn how and why he moved the wheels on his car.

Surveying together.

Kaden and Sophia talked about why they didn't roll numbers like 2, 3 and 12 frequently.

Creating cards and pictures for family and friends.

More coloring for friends and family!

To clean up their creation they created an assembly line to get the job done the fastest way possible!

This week and next week before Fall Break are busy weeks.  This week we will continue observing items on our tables during Writing Workshop.  New pumpkins were added to the tables.  Ask your children what makes them different this week.  What are some things they added to their writing today?  We are reviewing the words: and, like, I the  this week during our lessons.  During Math we have begun a new Math In Focus chapter focusing on size and position.  We are comparing the different sizes of items or noticing if they are the same size.

Thank you again for coming in to meet with Meaghan and I last week.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns!  Enjoy some other photos from the past week below!

Bianca's piece of art from last year was selected for the Graland Permanent Art Collection.  Congratulations Bianca!

The whole school gathered this morning for the Graland Permanent Art Collection assembly.  Each year a panel of judges selects several pieces of student art to become part of the collection.   What great artists Graland has!

Just helping a friend out!
